Len Crosby and Brian Rogers - Your Continued Discussions with KMPO

by 4 min read

Summary

Len Crosby asks Brian Rogers, copying KMPO's Glenn Miles, to stop using the chambers' Joint Public Policy Committee as a forum for concerns about KMPO's planning and to raise them only at KMPO, county and city meetings. Brian Rogers replies the same afternoon that he will keep speaking up for the residents opposed to the direction of development.

Why it matters: The four chambers' Joint Public Policy Committee asked a resident to keep KMPO concerns out of its forum and away from its members, leaving KMPO, county and city meetings as the places to be heard.

On September 23, 2021, Len Crosby wrote to Brian Rogers, copying Glenn Miles of the Kootenai Metropolitan Planning Organization (KMPO), about Brian’s emails to the members of the chambers’ Joint Public Policy Committee. Brian replied the same afternoon. Both emails follow, oldest first, as they were written. Every email address and phone number is redacted. The original email, redacted the same way, is a PDF.

Importance: High

Good afternoon, Mr. Rogers:

I personally appreciate your interest in the infrastructure planning that KMPO is working on for our region, but must ask that you refrain from utilizing the Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Committee as a forum for that discussion.

I certainly invite you to join the Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Hayden or Rathdrum Chamber and as a member of one of those Chambers participate in our Joint Public Policy Committee and raise any public policy issues you feel we should address or advocate. The Committee is, however, a forum for discussion by those members of one of those four Chambers of Commerce who are interested or involved in Public Policy. Clearly as a citizen of Kootenai County you can attend any meeting of KMPO, or of the County or City representatives who make up the KMPO Board to address your concerns. Indeed, you appear to have the full attention of Mr. Miles who has addressed your concerns in a number of responses.

In the future, please limit your efforts to these avenues, and do not involve or copy the individual members of the Joint Chamber Public Policy Committee. I am making this same request of Mr. Miles.

Thank you for your assistance, and for your continued efforts to address important infrastructure issues in our Community.

Sincerely,

Len Crosby

Mr Crosby,

I am not clear on what you are asking below. Regardless of whether or not I join a chamber of commerce, I will continue to interact with the email thread that I imagine you are referencing.

Also, to both you and Mr. Miles, I request you understand that the people who signed the petition in my original email are a growing group who are in disagreement with the direction of development in this area. I’m sure you are aware of this already.

In addition, Mr. Miles did not answer the questions I asked of him. In fact, the response appears to be deliberately obtuse and deflecting.

My understanding of these commerce meetings is they are poorly managed and are not taking into consideration the voice of the people who attend, but rather focus on the developers and bureaucrats who are out of touch with the people. In fact, in this matter that I am currently addressing, back in 2007, the mayor of Post Falls voted against the action. The role of the mayor should be the larger voice for the people; his concern was overridden, which is disturbing.

It is challenging for me to understand on what basis you believe you have the authority to ask a tax-paying citizen how to voice their opinion. Regardless, I see the intent of this email not to be courteous but, rather, hostile.

I want to be clear, there are several other avenues to make people aware of what is going on with these committees. I am actively working on improving the visibility for the people of Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, and Rathdrum to be made aware of the negative behavior of these groups. Regardless of whether the meetings are civil, they are not listening to the bulk of the tax-paying constitutes.

With all that said, the set of folks I have spoken with is just over 300 at this time. I have gone door-to-door in the area and I’m as appalled by what is going on as the people I have spoken with throughout the region. There are groups organizing on social media platforms which number in the thousands that are revolting.

Sincerely,

Brian Rogers
